The Federal Government has shut down a mining site in Plateau State after at least 37 villagers reportedly died from inhaling poisonous gases during local mining activities in Zurak community, Wase Local Government Area.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the victims were said to have been working in an underground pit when they were exposed to toxic fumes believed to have accumulated in poorly ventilated tunnels. Many of those who lost their lives were aged between 20 and 35.
In addition to the fatalities, about 25 others were hospitalised after breathing in what was suspected to be carbon monoxide.
Following the incident, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, ordered the immediate suspension of operations at Mining Licence 11810, operated by Solid Unit Nigeria Limited.
The licence, owned by Abdullahi Dan China, covers a designated area within specific longitude and latitude coordinates in Wase.
The directive was announced in a statement issued in Abuja by the minister’s Special Assistant on Media, Segun Tomori.
During a condolence visit to Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, Alake expressed sadness over the deaths and described the victims as citizens seeking legitimate means of livelihood. He urged the governor to convey his sympathy to the affected families and the entire Wase community.
To determine the cause of the tragedy, the minister constituted a high level investigative team led by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Yusuf Yabo. The team comprises experts in mining operations, environmental safety and artisanal mining.

Officials said the panel will examine the immediate and remote causes of the gas leak and recommend necessary actions, including possible sanctions. Further details are expected as investigations continue.
