EKO HOT BLOG reports that the State Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Lawan Wakilbe, expressed concern that many freed victims were subjected to sexual exploitation during captivity, leaving them vulnerable. He identified the prevalence of prostitution in Bama, Banki, and Gwoza local government areas.

Wakilbe recounted a heartbreaking incident involving an 11-year-old girl, already a mother of three. He also noted the recent repatriation of girls aged 13 to 15 from Cameroon, many of whom had multiple children.
The commissioner emphasised the urgent need for reintegration programs to support these individuals, attributing the widespread sexual abuse to poverty and limited survival options. He urged action to address the underlying issues fueling this crisis.

The statement comes amid ongoing challenges in Borno, including the 2014 abduction of 276 girls from Chibok, some of whom remain unaccounted for. Since the Boko Haram insurgency began in 2009, it has claimed over 50,000 lives and displaced more than two million people in Nigeria’s northeastern region.
