Rivers State has reported a fresh cholera outbreak, claiming the lives of nine people in two local government areas (LGAs).

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, confirmed the deaths during a media briefing in Port Harcourt on Thursday.

According to Oreh, three fatalities were recorded in Andoni LGA, while Akuku-Toru LGA accounted for six deaths.

The outbreak has been linked to 41 suspected cases of acute watery diarrhea, with the symptoms aligning with cholera, although the Ministry of Health has not yet confirmed the exact cause of the deaths.

Dr. Oreh emphasized that the victims in Isiodun, Andoni, showed signs consistent with cholera, an infectious disease caused by the Vibrio cholerae bacteria.

Cholera thrives in areas with poor sanitation and hygiene, and is typically spread through contaminated food or water.

This latest cholera outbreak is a major concern for public health, especially as the region has faced recurrent episodes of acute watery diarrhea and cholera during the dry season.

Dr. Oreh noted the high mortality rate associated with these outbreaks, adding that the state has already launched a swift response to control the situation.

On January 11, 2025, health authorities were alerted to the deaths in Andoni, prompting a rapid response team to investigate and implement containment measures.
