Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has unveiled plans to alleviate the financial burden of estimated electricity costs on public tertiary institutions by deploying solar energy solutions.
This initiative seeks to deliver a reliable and eco-friendly power supply to universities grappling with escalating utility expenses.

This commitment was announced recently during the 55th graduation ceremony of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) in Akoka, Yaba.
Ably represented by the Education Minister, Dr. Tunji Alausa, the president reiterated his administration’s resolve to advance Nigeria’s education system.

Universities nationwide, including UNILAG, have long struggled with the challenge of rising electricity bills.

President Tinubu stated: “My administration understands that education forms the foundation of national progress. It is the pillar upon which a thriving society is built. This principle is evident in our policies and investments within the education sector.
“In the proposed fiscal plan for 2025, we have earmarked N3.52 trillion for education, marking it as the third-largest allocation. This ‘Budget of Restoration: Securing Peace, Rebuilding Prosperity’ reflects our unwavering commitment to economic stability, enhanced livelihoods, and positioning Nigeria for a brighter tomorrow.
“Programs like the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, have broadened access to higher learning, ensuring that economic hardship does not obstruct our youth from pursuing their aspirations. Thousands of beneficiaries have already accessed this scheme, and we are dedicated to extending its reach to even more students.
