The timing of Donald Trump’s cryptocurrency launch just days before his inauguration has raised significant ethical concerns among experts, particularly regarding potential conflicts of interest.
Known for his past criticism of Bitcoin, calling it a “scam,” Trump pivoted during his election campaign, receiving robust support from the crypto industry after promising to make America the “crypto capital of the planet.”

The launch of the Trump-branded meme coin just hours before taking office has alarmed ethics experts.
Richard Painter, a law professor at the University of Minnesota and former top ethics lawyer in the George W. Bush administration, called the move unprecedented and troubling.
“It is very dangerous to have those responsible for overseeing financial regulations investing in the instruments they are supposed to regulate,” Painter told CNN.

He raised concerns that Trump’s future policies could inflate the coin’s value, especially with his promise of a crypto-friendly administration.
While federal employees are barred from engaging in financial activities that could create conflicts of interest, such regulations do not apply to the president or vice president, leaving Trump in a unique position to potentially benefit financially from crypto-friendly policies.
The coin’s announcement came just before the resignation of Gary Gensler, the outgoing chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, who had clashed with the crypto industry.
