President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Kayode Opeifa as the substantive Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC).
Opeifa, a former Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, succeeds Ben Iloanusi, who had served in an acting capacity since the exit of Fidet Okhiria on October 18, 2024, following the completion of his second four-year tenure.

His prominence began during his tenure as Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation under Governor Babatunde Fashola’s administration, where he implemented innovative policies that modernized Lagos’ transportation system. His initiatives significantly improved traffic management and positioned Lagos as a model for urban transport across Africa.
Building on his legacy in Lagos, Opeifa served as the Transport Secretary for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. His extensive expertise also saw him play a pivotal role in tackling the notorious Apapa gridlock in Lagos.
As Vice-Chairman of the Presidential Task Team (PTT) on Apapa traffic congestion, Opeifa worked closely with former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to alleviate port-related traffic challenges, earning national acclaim for his efforts.

In his new role as Managing Director of the NRC, Opeifa faces the critical task of advancing Nigeria’s rail infrastructure and services.
