- Trump signs executive orders to remove DEI programs from the military and federal agencies.
- New policy will address transgender troops and reinstate service members discharged over COVID-19 vaccine refusals.
- Military training will focus on readiness, while curricula at military academies will be reviewed for “radical” DEI content.
President Donald Trump is set to sign several military-focused executive orders on Monday, including one that aims to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives within the Department of Defence.
This move is part of his broader agenda to remove DEI programs from the federal government, a key promise made during his campaign.

In addition to the DEI order, Trump plans to issue a second executive order requiring US officials to develop a policy regarding transgender military personnel.
A third order will reinstate military members who were discharged for refusing to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
The orders, confirmed by a White House official to CBS, will ban race- or sex-based preferences in all branches of the military, the Department of Defence, and the Department of Homeland Security.
Furthermore, any remaining DEI-related bureaucratic structures will be dismantled within these departments. Officials will also be tasked with reviewing curricula at military academies, such as West Point and the US Air Force Academy, to eliminate materials perceived as promoting “radical” DEI or gender ideologies.

New US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has reiterated the commitment to removing such initiatives, stating that more executive orders are forthcoming.
Over the weekend, reports emerged that the US Air Force was reviewing training materials about the contributions of Black and female pilots during World War II as part of the effort to comply with Trump’s DEI directives.
However, military officials clarified on Sunday that certain historical curricula would not be removed from basic training programs.
Hegseth emphasized that military training would prioritize readiness and the needs of troops in the field to deter enemies, focusing on “legality, readiness, and warfighting.”

The third executive order will address the reinstatement of US military personnel who were discharged for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine, a decision Trump called “unjust” during his inauguration speech. Around 8,000 service members were discharged for vaccine refusal, with only 43 reinstated before Trump’s return to office.
Upon taking office, Trump ordered immediate paid administrative leave for all US government employees working on DEI initiatives, giving them until 5:00 PM EST the following day to vacate their positions before the relevant offices and programs were shut down. He described these DEI programs as “dangerous, demeaning, and immoral.”
