President Donald Trump has ordered a sweeping freeze on trillions of dollars in federal aid to Americans, affecting grants, loans, and other financial assistance programs.
The controversial move, announced in a White House memo on Tuesday, has triggered widespread backlash, with critics calling it unconstitutional and a threat to essential services.

The memo, signed by acting Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Matthew Vaeth, did not specify how long the funding halt would last. However, it follows Trump’s previous decision to suspend foreign aid, signaling an aggressive push to reshape federal spending policies.
The freeze excludes Social Security and Medicare but could affect funding for education, environmental programs, healthcare, and small business assistance.
A senior Trump administration official described the order as a tool to ensure federal programs align with the president’s political agenda.
“Funding should be dedicated to advancing administration priorities,” the memo states, listing objectives such as controlling inflation, boosting domestic manufacturing, and eliminating “woke” initiatives, including diversity, equity, and climate change programs.

The decision has sparked immediate backlash from Democrats and advocacy groups. Senator Patty Murray condemned the freeze as “a brazen & illegal move,” urging Trump to follow the law and restore funding.
Senator Richard Blumenthal warned that the move would create “havoc” in critical areas such as medical research and public health.
Senator Chris Van Hollen called it “political vandalism,” accusing Trump of using a “wrecking ball” to dismantle government programs.
Environmental and social justice organizations have also sounded alarms.
The Sierra Club warned that the freeze could jeopardize disaster relief efforts, home heating assistance, clean drinking water programs, and the National Suicide Prevention Hotline.
Sierra Club Executive Director Ben Jealous said Trump’s order “immediately and significantly puts Americans in danger.”
While the administration claims the measure is legally sound, critics argue that it violates the Constitution, which grants Congress the power to control federal spending.
