Murkthar Suleiman, Communications Officer for International IDEA, said in a press release on Sunday that the two-day training in Abuja will serve as a “Training of Trainers” (ToT) workshop. Participants will come from all 130 branches of the NBA, including branch chairpersons and leaders of the Young Lawyers’ Forum.
After the training, these representatives will be responsible for teaching other lawyers in their branches to ensure the new professional guidelines reach legal practitioners across Nigeria.
The purpose of the workshop is to help lawyers better understand the revised rules, encourage ethical behavior, and improve compliance with professional standards. A key outcome will be a report identifying reasons behind unethical practices in the legal profession, which will help promote accountability.
According to International IDEA, the training is part of a broader effort to increase transparency, accountability, and integrity in Nigeria’s legal sector.
“The NBA and its members have a key role in maintaining professional ethics, ensuring fair and transparent court processes, and building public trust in the legal system,” Suleiman said.
The training will:
Increase lawyers’ knowledge of the 2023 Rules of Professional Conduct.
Promote ethical legal practice and reduce professional misconduct.
Identify key reasons for unethical behavior in the legal profession.
Encourage accountability and transparency among lawyers.
This initiative shows the NBA’s commitment to ensuring that Nigerian lawyers follow international best practices in legal ethics. It also highlights the EU’s continued support for reforms in Nigeria’s governance and justice system through the Multi-Annual Indicative Programme (MIP) 2022-2027.

The NBA, with over 140,000 members, is one of the most influential legal organizations in Africa. It advocates for human rights, the rule of law, and good governance. Similarly, International IDEA is a global organization focused on strengthening democracy and improving justice systems worldwide.
