U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday a 30-day delay in imposing tariffs on Canada, citing progress in border security talks.
The pause, he said, will allow time to determine whether a final economic agreement can be reached between the two countries.

Trump stated that he was “very pleased” with Canada’s commitment to enhancing border security to curb the flow of fentanyl into the United States.
“Canada has agreed to ensure we have a secure Northern Border and to finally end the deadly scourge of drugs like fentanyl,” he wrote on his Truth Social platform.
The announcement followed a call between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Trudeau later confirmed the agreement in a post on X, outlining Canada’s commitments in exchange for the tariff pause.

These include significant investments in border security, the formation of a “Canada-U.S. Joint Strike Force” to combat organized crime, fentanyl trafficking, and money laundering, as well as appointing a “Fentanyl Czar.” Additionally, Canada will join the U.S. in designating cartels as terrorist organizations.
“I have also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl, and we will be backing it with $200 million,” Trudeau stated.
The temporary tariff suspension comes after weeks of trade tensions between the two nations. Trump had previously threatened new levies on Canadian imports, prompting concerns from businesses and trade analysts.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt commented on the agreement, stating, “Canada is bending the knee, just like Mexico.” Her remark underscored the administration’s firm stance on border security policies.
Analysts suggest that the outcome of ongoing negotiations will determine whether tariffs are reinstated after the 30-day period or if a broader economic deal will be finalized.
