In a significant milestone for healthcare in Nigeria, the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Caregiver Academy has celebrated the graduation of its second cohort of students, Eko Hot Blog reports.
The ceremony, which took place at the hospital’s MRC Auditorium, saw 137 students receive their certifications, marking a substantial contribution to addressing the country’s healthcare challenges.

Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, congratulated the graduates and highlighted the Caregiver Academy as a strategic initiative of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.
The academy’s establishment seeks to bolster and complement the healthcare workforce in Lagos, particularly amidst a growing shortage of providers.

The Commissioner, represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor, Dr. Oluwatoni Adeyemi, emphasized the government’s efforts to increase skilled professionals at all levels of patient care.
Furthermore, Prof. Abayomi commended LASUTH’s Chief Medical Director, Prof. Adetokunbo O. Fabamwo, for his exceptional contributions in making LASUTH a premier healthcare institution.

Reflecting on the academy’s journey, Prof. Fabamwo noted that while its popularity exceeded expectations, LASUTH had meticulously designed the program to ensure excellence.
One unique aspect, he highlighted, was the inclusion of an international certification from John Academy in the United Kingdom, in addition to the LASUTH certificate.

This global recognition would enable graduates to work internationally.
The comprehensive curriculum of the Caregiver Academy also covers essential aspects such as the legal components of caregiving to provide well-rounded professional training.
Dr. (Mrs.) Atinuke Onayiga, Chairman of the Lagos State Health Service Commission, commended LASUTH’s dedication to empowering caregivers, who serve as the backbone of the healthcare system.
She praised Prof. Fabamwo’s visionary leadership in establishing multiple training schools within LASUTH, solidifying its status as Nigeria’s leading tertiary healthcare institution.
