Two women were gang-raped, and a man was killed in an attack near the Unesco World Heritage site of Hampi in southern India, police have confirmed.
The victims, an Israeli tourist and an Indian homestay operator, were stargazing near a lake in Karnataka’s Koppal district with three male tourists when they were ambushed on Thursday night, Superintendent of Police Ram Arasiddi told Reuters.
According to Arasiddi, the attackers forced the men into the Tungabhadra River canal before sexually assaulting the two women. Two of the men, including an American tourist, survived, while the body of the third victim was recovered on Saturday morning.

“Five people—two women and three men—were attacked near Sanapur. Among them, two are foreigners: an American man and an Israeli woman,” Arasiddi stated.
Police have arrested two suspects linked to the assault, and investigations are ongoing. Authorities believe the attackers followed the group before launching their assault.
One of the women recounted that the group had been stargazing near a temple in Sanapur when three men arrived on a motorcycle, claiming they needed petrol. While the tourists tried to help, one of the men suddenly demanded 100 rupees ($1.29). When the homestay operator refused, another tourist handed them 20 rupees, but an argument quickly escalated into violence.
The attack resulted in multiple criminal charges, including extortion, robbery, gang rape, and attempted murder. A case has been registered at Gangavathi Rural Police Station, and the victims are receiving medical care at a government hospital.

Hampi, known for its historic ruins and temples from the Vijayanagara Empire, was designated a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1986.
Karnataka’s Chief Minister Siddaramaiah condemned the attack, calling it a “most heinous act” in a post on X. He stated that police acted swiftly, securing the arrest of two suspects while continuing their investigation.
The incident follows growing concerns over women’s safety in India, which gained international attention last year after the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata. That case triggered nationwide protests demanding stronger protections for women.
