Elon Musk’s electric vehicle giant, Tesla, has warned that U.S. exporters, including itself, could suffer if foreign nations retaliate against President Donald Trump’s trade tariffs.
Despite Musk’s close ties to Trump and his leadership in efforts to shrink the federal government, Tesla expressed concerns in an unsigned letter to the U.S. trade representative. While stating its support for fair trade, the company warned that American exporters could face “disproportionate impacts” if other countries impose countermeasures.
The letter was dated the same day Trump publicly backed Musk, promising to purchase a Tesla at a White House event.

Tesla’s stock has fallen 40% since the beginning of the year. While some believe Musk’s association with the Trump administration is damaging the brand, analysts attribute the decline to production challenges and slowing sales.
In the letter, Tesla outlined efforts to restructure its supply chain by sourcing more components domestically to reduce dependence on foreign markets. However, it cautioned that “even with aggressive localization, certain parts and components are difficult or impossible to source within the U.S.”

The trade dispute escalated when Trump imposed an additional 20% tariff on all imports from China, leading Beijing to retaliate with levies, including on electric vehicles. China is Tesla’s second-largest market after the U.S.
“Past trade actions by the United States have resulted in immediate reactions by the targeted countries, including increased tariffs on EVs imported into those countries,” the letter warned.
Other major U.S. trading partners, including the EU and Canada, have also threatened broad retaliatory measures in response to tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, which took effect earlier this week.

Meanwhile, Tesla showrooms have been the target of protests over Musk’s role in the Trump administration. As head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Musk has overseen aggressive cost-cutting measures within the federal workforce.
At a recent White House event, Trump denounced the protests, stating that demonstrators should be considered domestic terrorists. Seated in a red Tesla he claimed he planned to buy, the president defended Musk and warned that anyone resorting to violence against Tesla would “go through hell.”
