Africa has been granted nine automatic qualification spots for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, an increase from previous tournaments. Additionally, a tenth team will have the chance to compete in an intercontinental playoff, where they will face teams from other continents for a final ticket to the World Cup.
The winners of each qualifying group will automatically qualify for the tournament. Meanwhile, the four best second-placed teams will enter a separate playoff round, where they will compete for a chance to represent Africa in the intercontinental playoff.
Based on the latest results, here are the seven African teams currently occupying the playoff spots:
1. Gabon – 15 points
2. Cameroon – 12 points
3. Senegal – 12 points
4. Namibia – 12 points
5. Comoros – 12 points
6. Mozambique – 12 points
7. Burkina Faso – 11 points
Nigeria’s current position in fourth place means they will need to win their remaining matches and hope that other teams drop points. The Super Eagles must defeat top rivals like South Africa and avoid further draws or losses if they want to secure qualification.
