EKO HOT BLOG reports that delivering a unanimous verdict on Friday, a five-member panel of the apex court held that the Appeal Court erred in its decision to pronounce Abure as chairman, having already acknowledged that the case centered on the party’s internal leadership matters.
According to the Supreme Court, leadership issues within a political party are strictly internal and not justiciable, meaning courts have no constitutional power to interfere.
The panel allowed an appeal brought before it by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman and one other, ruling that the appeal had merit. In contrast, it dismissed the cross-appeal filed by Abure’s faction of the Labour Party, describing it as lacking merit.

This ruling effectively sets aside any legal validation previously granted to Abure’s leadership claim and reinforces the long-standing legal position that party leadership tussles must be resolved within party structures, not through the judiciary.
