In a historic event for the ancient city of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade was officially crowned as the 46th Alaafin, or traditional ruler, of the Yoruba town of Oyo.
The grand coronation ceremony took place on Saturday at Olivet Heights Baptist School in Oyo and was attended by numerous dignitaries from Nigeria and beyond.

Among those present were Governor Seyi Makinde, Olubadan of Ibadan Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, Ooni of Ife Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Soun of Ogbomoso Oba Ghandi Olaoye, Oluwo of Iwo Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, and Aare Oona Kankanfo of Yoruba Iba Gani Adams.

To ensure the safety and security of all attendees, the Oyo State Government implemented heightened security measures, including deploying security operatives to strategic locations throughout the city and surrounding communities.
Oba Owoade, who was presented with the staff of office and instrument of office on January 13, 2025, at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan, now assumes the throne following the passing of the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi.
Oba Owoade completed the traditional 21-day Oro Ipebi rites last Saturday, setting the stage for a grand ceremony that celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people.
