Nigeria’s legal community and the nation at large are mourning the passing of former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mohammed Uwais, who died at the age of 88 on Friday.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the news of his demise was confirmed by Ondo State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kayode Ajulo.

Justice Uwais had a distinguished career in Nigeria’s judiciary, serving as the Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1995 to 2006.
During his tenure, he was instrumental in spearheading various judicial reforms and promoting electoral integrity, leaving a lasting impact on the country’s justice system.

Following his retirement, Uwais remained actively involved in shaping Nigeria’s democracy.
He was appointed by the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua to head the Presidential Electoral Reform Committee, contributing to the country’s pursuit of free, fair, and transparent elections.
President Bola Tinubu, in a statement issued on Friday, expressed condolences to the late jurist’s family and Nigerians at large, describing Uwais as a man of “distinguished career as a lawyer and a judge” who made “notable contributions in bringing justice closer to the people.”
Funeral arrangements for the late Chief Justice are expected to be announced in due course.
