EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a letter dated June 13, 2025, addressed to the PDP National Chairman and obtained by PUNCH, INEC expressed concern that the notification was not compliant with Part 2(12)3 of the 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties.
The letter, referenced INEC/DEPM/PDP/286/iii/80 and titled “RE: NOTICE OF 100TH NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING OF THE PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY”, was signed by the commission’s acting secretary, Mathru Aminu.
According to INEC, the submitted notice was invalid as it was signed solely by the party’s acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, without the mandatory co-signature of the National Secretary. “The Commission draws your attention that the notice is not in compliance with the requirement… that provides ‘the National Chairman and National Secretary of the Party shall jointly sign the notice of convention, congress, conference or meeting and submit same to the Commission. Be guided,” Aminu wrote.
The PDP had earlier, on May 30, issued the notice to INEC, in line with the 21-day notification rule, but failed to meet the dual-signature requirement. The party has yet to respond formally to INEC’s warning.
Insiders within the PDP confirm that the NEC meeting is set to address several critical issues, including disputes over the National Secretary’s office, the ratification of zonal congresses, and the adoption of key internal reports.

The meeting, which has been postponed six times, comes at a time when the PDP is struggling with internal divisions, particularly in Rivers State and across the South-South and South-East. The opposition party is also reeling from the defection of high-profile members, most recently Governors Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta) and Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), who have joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
