EKO HOT BLOG reports that Barcelona have expressed strong interest in signing Williams from Athletic Bilbao and are reportedly willing to activate his €62 million release clause. This release clause is the only clear path for the player to leave Bilbao for Camp Nou this summer.
However, concerns have lingered over whether Barcelona can afford to complete the transfer and officially register him under La Liga’s strict financial regulations. Williams had initially demanded a written guarantee from Barcelona assuring him that he would be registered to play once the deal was finalised. His request was influenced by the club’s recent struggles to register players like Dani Olmo and Pau Victor.
While tension around the transfer appeared to have eased in recent days, Barcelona are racing against time to finalise the move before July 16, when Williams is scheduled to return for pre-season training with Athletic Bilbao.
Despite the club’s optimism, La Liga’s president, Javier Tebas, delivered a major blow to the transfer hopes on Tuesday. Speaking at an event organised by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Tebas confirmed that Barcelona have not yet met the league’s 1:1 financial rule, which restricts their ability to register new players.
“As of today, Barca would not be able to register Nico Williams,” Tebas stated. “The registration period for players started today, and right now they wouldn’t be able to do it.”

The development raises uncertainty over whether Barcelona can complete the signing this summer, unless they resolve their financial limitations swiftly.
