EKO HOT BLOG reports that Jota was travelling with his 26-year-old brother, Andre Silva, when their Lamborghini veered off the A-52 highway near Cernadilla, Zamora, and burst into flames. Local emergency services confirmed the brothers died at the scene after the vehicle reportedly suffered a tyre blowout while overtaking.
The Portuguese Football Federation expressed profound grief over the incident, describing Jota as not just a remarkable footballer with nearly 50 international caps, but also a beloved figure respected by teammates and opponents.
Jota had recently celebrated his wedding to Rute Cardoso, the mother of their three children. In his final social media post, shared on Wednesday, the Liverpool star called himself “the luckiest man in the world” to be her husband. The couple, who had been together since 2012, tied the knot on June 22 in Porto, Portugal.
Rute had posted more wedding photos just a day before the crash, celebrating their union as a dream come true. The family was seen together on the Anfield pitch in May, celebrating Liverpool’s Premier League title victory.
Spanish authorities reported that the crash occurred around 12:35 am. Emergency teams, including the Zamora Traffic Police and the regional fire brigade, were dispatched but found both men already deceased upon arrival.
Liverpool FC and the wider football community have been left in mourning. Portuguese Football Federation President Pedro Proenca described the deaths as an “irreparable loss” for Portuguese football and announced a minute’s silence before Portugal’s women’s European Championship match against Spain.
Diogo Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and was instrumental in the club’s recent successes, including their Premier League title win. His brother Andre played for Portuguese lower division side Penafiel.
Tributes continue to pour in from across the world, with many remembering Jota’s infectious joy and his deep love for his family.
