EKO HOT BLOG reports that this advice was given by prominent Ijaw leader and Convener of the South-South Reawakening Group (SSRG), Joseph Ambakederimo, who also encouraged Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, to abandon the opposition camp and align with the APC for the collective progress of the Ijaw people.
Speaking with journalists in Port Harcourt on Thursday, Ambakederimo argued that the PDP no longer serves the interests of the Ijaw nation and has failed to address the region’s growing infrastructural needs. According to him, aligning with the APC-led federal government offers the most viable path to economic growth and meaningful development for the South-South, particularly Bayelsa State.
“Politics is a game of interest,” Ambakederimo said. “Governor Diri should leave the PDP and join the APC because the Ijaw people no longer have a meaningful stake under the umbrella. There is no forward pathway for us in the PDP or even in the African Democratic Congress (ADC).”
He stressed that Bayelsa, as the only homogeneous Ijaw state, must not remain isolated from national politics. He argued that joining the ruling party would provide Ijaw leaders with a seat at the national decision-making table, where the region’s interests can be adequately represented.
“Our people need to understand that to benefit substantially and protect our political interests, we must be part of the platform where national decisions are made. Anything less is a political illusion,” he stated.
Ambakederimo commended Governor Diri for his development-oriented leadership but insisted that a defection to the APC would not be a selfish move but one made in the best interest of the Ijaw people.
“This is not the time for cautious steps but for courageous leaps,” he declared. “The Ijaw people have been left behind for too long. It is time to galvanise ourselves for a new era of economic renaissance.”
He noted that switching to the APC would open up wider federal opportunities for Ijaw sons and daughters, extending their influence beyond state-level appointments to key positions at the national level.
Citing historical examples, Ambakederimo referenced the political success of Ijaw leaders like Chief Harold Dappa-Biriye and Chief Melford Okilo, who gained national prominence by aligning with ruling parties during the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) era.

“In the past, when the Ijaws aligned with the ruling party, they advanced. It’s a proven formula. So, my call on Governor Diri is not misplaced. The well-being of our people must always be the overriding motivation,” he concluded.
