EKO HOT BLOG reports that Buhari’s remains are being flown to Nigeria overnight, with preparations already underway for his interment in line with Islamic burial rites, which require burial within 24 hours of death.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, who was in London at the time of Buhari’s passing, is accompanying the late president’s body back to Nigeria on President Tinubu’s directive.
A top official in the presidency confirmed late Sunday that Buhari would be buried today in his hometown of Daura. “They’re bringing his corpse over the night. They’ll go straight to Daura and bury him tomorrow,” the source said, citing Islamic customs.
Although the Presidency has yet to formally publish President Tinubu’s Monday schedule, insiders indicate he will likely join the burial once the remains arrive in Daura.
“There is every indication the President will go. Once the corpse gets to Daura, he can proceed there to attend,” another source stated.
Additionally, several West African leaders are expected to arrive in Nigeria to pay their respects, although official confirmations were still pending as of Sunday night. Diplomatic sources said these leaders may stay in hotels until scheduled meetings with President Tinubu are arranged.
Buhari, who led Nigeria as a military ruler from 1983 to 1985 and as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, was known for his anti-corruption stance and efforts to restore discipline in public service.
President Tinubu, who returned to Nigeria from a foreign trip on Sunday morning, is said to be resting ahead of today’s solemn event.
