Claims are circulating on social media that the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has cancelled the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.
A purported press release, dated July 19, claimed that the Federal Ministry of Education and WAEC jointly scrapped the entire examination over widespread malpractice, leaked question papers, and unauthorised digital distribution. The notice, titled Urgent Notice: Immediate Cancellation of 2025 WAEC Examinations Nationwide, subsequently sparked confusion among candidates and parents.

But WAEC has dismissed the notice as fake and malicious. In a statement issued by the Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, the Council stated unequivocally that the exam was not cancelled and that preparations were ongoing for the release of results.
“The WAEC Management would like to state unequivocally that the spurious Press Statement being circulated did not emanate from the Council,” Adesina said. “The said examination has not been cancelled.”
WAEC attributed the false publication to unknown individuals seeking to undermine its credibility and mislead the public.
“Though the source of that information cannot be ascertained, the Council is certain that the false claim is being peddled by mischief-makers who are bent on bringing the Council to disrepute to cause confusion and panic among candidates who sat the examination,” the statement read.
Contrary to the claims made in the viral message, WAEC said it had just concluded the marking of exam scripts and confirmed that candidates should expect their results soon.
“As a matter of fact, the marking scripts of the said examination has just been concluded and results will be released on or before Monday, August 4, 2025,” the Council said.

WAEC also used the opportunity to remind stakeholders that all official information from the Council is disseminated through its verified social media handles and accredited media outlets. Press releases, it noted, are issued only by the Public Affairs Department.
“We therefore urge our stakeholders and the general public to disregard the said publication,” Adesina concluded.
CLAIM: The Federal Ministry of Education and WAEC jointly scrapped the entire 2025 WASSCE.
VERDICT: The viral “press release” claiming the cancellation of the 2025 WASSCE is FALSE. WAEC has completed the marking of scripts and confirmed that results will be released by August 4. The fake cancellation notice did not originate from the Council and has been disowned in full.
