Factional chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, has defended his recent visit to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, describing it as a private engagement that has been wrongly interpreted by critics.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that photos of Abure’s meeting with the FCT minister surfaced online last week, drawing sharp criticism from party members and the public. Many accused Abure of fraternising with the ruling party, especially amid the ongoing leadership tussle within the Labour Party.
Speaking during the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Monday, Abure said the visit was personal and should not be politicised.
“Last week, I met with the FCT minister, and it attracted a lot of comments, misconceptions, and controversy surrounding the photographs that went viral,” he said.
“Now that we are meeting as a party, I want to make it clear that I am a Nigerian, and I reside in Abuja. Nyesom Wike is the Minister of the FCT. I reserve the right to interface with any public official, especially those who oversee where I live.”
He stressed that the meeting was not a political gathering, nor was it in any way connected to the internal affairs of the Labour Party. “The meeting was privileged and purely private,” he said.
Abure also used the platform to reassert his leadership, claiming that the growth of the party into a national political force happened under his watch.
“We have paid our dues in this party. We’ve led this party for years and, by God’s grace, the Labour Party is now one of the most influential political parties in Nigeria,” he stated.

Abure’s comments come at a time when the party is facing internal division, with two factions laying claim to the national leadership. While Abure leads one faction, another led by former finance minister Nenadi Usman claims to be the legitimate national structure of the party.
