Popular late-night host Stephen Colbert has fired back at former US President Donald Trump after the latter celebrated the planned cancellation of The Late Show.
Eko hot blog gathered that during Monday night’s broadcast, Colbert launched into a defiant monologue, accusing Trump of vindictiveness and mocking the show’s demise. The CBS show is scheduled to end in May 2026.

“How dare you, sir? Go f**k yourself,” Colbert said, reacting to Trump’s post on Truth Social. Trump had mocked the show’s cancellation, calling it a “win for America”.
Colbert, who has long been known for his sharp political satire, said he would now speak “unvarnished truth” until the final episode. “The gloves are off,” he declared, earning cheers from the audience.
Several prominent figures were present in the audience, including Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, John Oliver, Jon Stewart, and CNN anchor Anderson Cooper. They gave Colbert a standing ovation.
Jon Stewart addressed the controversy on The Daily Show, praising Colbert’s success as a late-night leader. He criticised CBS’s parent company, Paramount Global, for recently paying Trump $16 million in a settlement over the editing of a 60 Minutes interview with Vice President Kamala Harris.
“An extortion fee,” Stewart called it, suggesting the cancellation had less to do with ratings or budget and more with political fear.
Stewart said: “What we’re witnessing is pre-compliance. Institutions are too afraid to fight the vindictive tantrums of a man who doodles on public documents.”

Colbert had also blasted the settlement in a previous episode, calling it a “big, fat bribe.” The timing of his show’s cancellation has raised eyebrows among critics, who say the decision reeks of corporate interference.
On The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon added, “I don’t like what’s going on one bit.”
Other stars like Rachel Zegler and Adam Scott expressed sadness over the news, while Jimmy Kimmel reportedly cursed out CBS for pulling the plug.
Still, not everyone agrees. Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy called Colbert “arrogant” and defended CBS, describing the move as “just capitalism.”
Colbert’s final months on air are likely to be even more politically charged. His show has dominated ratings during Trump’s political reign and now seems poised to end on an unapologetically fiery note.
