Mountain lions, also known as cougars, are native predators that typically avoid humans. They can weigh up to 150 pounds and primarily hunt elk and deer but also prey on smaller animals.
While attacks on humans are rare, park officials urged caution and reiterated safety protocols in the event of an encounter. People are advised to face the animal, appear larger, and back away slowly never run.
This attack has raised concerns among visitors, though officials reassured the public that such incidents are highly uncommon.
Efforts are ongoing to monitor mountain lion movements in the park to prevent similar incidents.
Authorities have also increased patrols along popular hiking routes and plan to install additional warning signs.
The park service concluded by urging visitors to remain alert and report any sightings of wild animals immediately.
