- Lagos State Ministry of Health Calls on Medical Guild to Ease Strik
Doctors in Lagos State began a three-day warning strike on Monday, July 29, 2025, leaving many patients stranded across public hospitals.
The industrial action was organized by the Medical Guild, an association representing doctors in the state, according to Daily Trust reports.
The strike was initiated because of unresolved salary disputes. Doctors are protesting “illegal and disrespectful” deductions made from their July salaries. Additionally, they are demanding the payment of 12 months’ worth of outstanding allowances owed to honorary consultants, which falls under the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS).
The impact of the strike was immediately felt in major hospitals, including the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH). Wards that are usually busy were reported to be empty, and various hospital departments appeared deserted.
Patients who arrived at the facilities seeking medical attention were unfortunately turned away and advised to return home due to the lack of medical personnel.
The Lagos State Ministry of Health has acknowledged the ongoing strike and its impact. They have issued an appeal for calm among the public and the medical community.
The Ministry is urging the Medical Guild to call off the strike and return to the negotiating table to discuss and resolve the outstanding issues.
The government aims to find a quick resolution to ensure that essential healthcare services can resume for the benefit of all citizens in the state.
