President Bola Tinubu recently convened a special session of the National Economic Council (NEC), bringing together governors from all states to confront the severe economic hardship and public discontent currently gripping the nation.
Eko Hot Blog reports that he used the platform to issue a strong call to action, urging the governors to work closely with the federal government to ensure that the gains from recent economic reforms, particularly the removal of the petrol subsidy, are felt directly by citizens at the grassroots level. This appeal is a direct response to the widespread suffering and hardship that have been a source of public frustration.

The President’s directive comes amid heightened scrutiny, including recent criticism from the United States over governors’ extravagant spending and a prominent cleric, Dr. Paul Enenche, who publicly lamented the suffering of citizens.
During the NEC meeting, President Tinubu placed a strong emphasis on accountability. He specifically charged the governors to be transparent and responsible with the increased financial allocations their states have received as a result of the subsidy removal.
The President acknowledged that government revenue had indeed improved due to these key reforms, but he was firm in stating that the ultimate success of the reforms would not be measured by numbers, but by their tangible impact on communities nationwide.

In the course of the meeting, the president officially introduced a new and ambitious initiative: the Renewed Hope Ward-Based Development Programme.
The new program, which was unanimously adopted by the Council, is designed to bring development closer to the people. It aims to decentralize development efforts, empower local communities, and create jobs by targeting at least 1,000 economically active individuals in each of Nigeria’s 8,809 wards.

In line with President Tinubu’s goal to ‘cascade reform dividends down to the grassroots,’ this collaborative initiative will channel resources to communities, aiming to boost productivity, reduce poverty, and enhance security, thereby ensuring the fair distribution of policy benefits across the country.
