EKO HOT BLOG reports that the clarification was issued on Sunday by the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the brigade, Captain Abayomi Adisa, who described the circulating reports as misleading and intended to misinform the public.
The army emphasised that the deceased was a corporal, not a lieutenant as wrongly reported in some online publications. It added that he enlisted in the Nigerian Army in 2012 under the 67 Regular Recruit Intake.
According to the statement, the incident that led to his death did not occur inside the barracks, contrary to public speculation. The army explained that Corporal Jude sustained injuries while deployed at the Forward Operating Base in Funtua after leaving his duty post to purchase personal items on February 16 at about 8:30 p.m.
He was reportedly attacked during an altercation with a civilian following a personal dispute. The army said he sustained stab wounds and other injuries consistent with a violent confrontation.
“The incident that led to his death did not occur within the barracks as speculated; rather, he sustained injuries outside while deployed at the Forward Operating Base in Funtua,” Captain Adisa stated.
Following the attack, the injured soldier was given immediate first aid and evacuated to the 17 Brigade Medical Centre, where he received treatment and was placed under medical observation. He was later relieved of duty to allow him to recover fully.
However, tragedy struck on March 24, 2026, when he reportedly collapsed outside his residence shortly after receiving medical attention. He was rushed back to the medical facility but was confirmed dead on arrival.
“In spite of weeks of treatment and clinical monitoring, tragedy struck on March 24, 2026, when he collapsed outside his residence shortly after receiving medical care. He was rushed back to the Medical Centre but was confirmed dead on arrival,” the statement read.
The brigade also said it supported the bereaved family, with the Garrison Commander overseeing burial arrangements and providing mortuary services. The 82 Division Garrison in Enugu also extended institutional support, while the soldier’s military belongings were handed over to his next of kin.
According to the army, communication was maintained with the family throughout the process, and security support was provided during the burial.

Captain Adisa explained that the delay in issuing an official statement was due to the need to verify facts and consult relevant military authorities before responding publicly.
The brigade reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and personnel welfare, while urging the public to rely only on verified and official information.
