The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), revealing a noticeable drop in the overall pass rate. Despite this, officials are celebrating the success of new, stricter measures implemented to combat examination malpractice.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Head of WAEC National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, directly linked the decline in candidate performance to the anti-cheating initiatives.

He specifically pointed to the serialization of objective papers in key subjects, which made it significantly more difficult for candidates to cheat.
According to Dangut, these measures are a crucial step toward restoring the credibility and integrity of the examination system.

A detailed look at the results shows some interesting trends. While the overall pass rate dropped, female candidates managed to slightly outperform their male counterparts in the crucial benchmark of passing five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
Dangut also confirmed that a portion of the results are being withheld due to alleged examination malpractice, but he noted that this percentage is a reduction from the figures of the previous year.
Looking ahead, WAEC has announced ambitious plans for the future of the WASSCE. The council is working towards a full transition to Computer-Based Testing (CBT) by 2026 and has also introduced new digital tools to better support both candidates and educational institutions.
In a final appeal, WAEC urged state governments with outstanding debts to the examination body to settle them as a matter of urgency. Resolving these debts would enable the council to release the results of the affected candidates, ensuring they are not unfairly penalized.
