Minister of Works, David Umahi, has announced plans to spend a massive N3.8 trillion to fix severe damage on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos. This information was revealed after a meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC).
Eko Hot Blog reports that a previous study found serious issues with the Third Mainland Bridge’s underwater structure. According to the Minister of Works, David Umahi, the damage is believed to have been caused by illegal sand mining, constant erosion, and general corrosion over time.

To tackle the problem, the government is considering two options: a full repair of the existing bridge for an estimated N3.8 trillion or building a brand-new bridge for about N3.6 trillion.
The council has approved a special financial framework to allow expert contractors to bid for the project. The government also plans to work with private companies to help fund and carry out the repairs, a process known as a public-private partnership (PPP).

The approved plans also include similar repair work for other bridges across Nigeria. In addition to the Third Mainland Bridge, the FEC approved N493 billion for other major projects, including work on the Kano–Katsina road and a new Carter Bridge, which will also be in Lagos.
