EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a post on 𝕏 on Saturday, Onanuga noted that the city already shares historic ties with Nigeria, recalling that it hosted the country’s Olympic team during the Tokyo 2021 Games.
He wrote, “After the closing ceremony of TICAD9, we went on a voyage of discovery to Kisarazu, the town the Japanese have designated as Nigeria’s hometown. Nigeria’s Olympic team camped here in 2021. The video shows the city centre, where the Mayor Watanabe’s office is also located.”
The Japanese government said Kisarazu will serve as a destination for Nigerians interested in living and working in the country. The initiative is part of Japan’s strategic efforts to strengthen cultural diplomacy, boost economic ties, and enhance workforce productivity.
Under the new partnership, Japan will introduce a special visa category for highly skilled and talented Nigerians willing to relocate to Kisarazu. Artisans and blue-collar workers who are ready to acquire new skills will also benefit from the special visa arrangement.
Nigeria’s Charge d’Affaires and Acting Ambassador to Japan, Mrs. Florence Akinyemi Adeseke, alongside the Mayor of Kisarazu, Yoshikuni Watanabe, received the official certificate naming Kisarazu the hometown of Nigerians.

At the same ceremony, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) also named Nagai in Yamagata Prefecture as the hometown of Tanzania, Sanjo in Niigata Prefecture as the hometown of Ghana, and Imabari in Ehime Prefecture as the hometown of Mozambique.
