The announcement was made during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and Digital Learning Network in Abuja yesterday.
UBEC Smart Schools are specially designed model schools created by UBEC to promote digital learning and modern teaching methods, located across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
At the event, Thomas Lamerna, CEO and President of Digital Learning Network, stated that the initiative will come at no cost to federal or state governments.
He explained that the public-private partnership aims to provide over 47 million students and teachers throughout Nigeria’s basic education sector with equal access to world-class digital learning tools, infrastructure, and training.

Lamerna added that the devices will come pre-loaded with free data, digital textbooks, and interactive learning materials aligned with the Nigerian curriculum set by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC).
He also noted that the programme will be fully funded through collaboration with Deloitte Financial Advisory, several commercial banks, and the National Credit Guarantee Company.
In her remarks, UBEC Executive Secretary Aisha Garba described the project as a significant milestone in closing the digital gap within Nigeria’s education sector.
She highlighted that by providing laptops and tablets, students and teachers will gain access to digital textbooks, interactive materials, and virtual classrooms, which will enhance teaching and learning outcomes.
Garba assured that the commission will collaborate closely with state governments, school officials, and relevant partners to ensure proper distribution and effective use of the devices.
She further added that training programmes will be introduced for teachers to improve their skills in digital teaching methods and to ensure that the technology leads to real improvements in education.
