The Lagos State Government has cautioned celebrities, influencers, and residents against giving money to street touts, warning that the practice fuels insecurity and lawlessness.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, issued the warning in response to a complaint raised by a user on 𝕏 about harassment and extortion by homeless boys and teenagers along the Lekki-Epe Expressway.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the user had urged the state government to deploy officials of the Lagos State Neighbourhood Watch to protect motorists from intimidation and assault along the busy corridor.
Reacting, Wahab said the perceived kindness of handing out money to touts only worsens the problem.
“Celebrities, influencers, and even well-meaning Lagosians must stop giving money to these miscreants. Each time you hand them cash, you are not solving their problem; you are encouraging them to stay on the streets, emboldening them to multiply, and reinforcing a cycle of lawlessness,” Wahab stated.
He stressed that such actions make enforcement efforts more difficult and create wider security and environmental concerns across the state.

“What may seem like an act of kindness only complicates the challenge, undermining the government’s work in keeping the state safe and orderly,” the commissioner added.
