The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has rescued a 16-year-old domestic worker who was allegedly bathed with hot water by her employer in the Gwarinpa area of Abuja.
Eko Hot Blog reports that NAPTIP disclosed in a statement on Friday that the rescue followed a tip-off from concerned neighbours who witnessed the assault and rushed the teenager to a hospital.

According to the agency, the victim, from Imo State and one of 12 children, had been employed to care for her employer’s three children, including two-month-old twins and a seven-year-old boy, while the employer worked night shifts.
“Reports indicate that the girl was scalded with hot water by her employer. Alert neighbours quickly rushed her to a hospital and immediately contacted NAPTIP, prompting a swift rescue operation,” the statement read.

The agency confirmed that it has launched an investigation into the case, vowing that “all individuals involved in this heinous act will face the full weight of the law.”
The incident adds to a troubling list of domestic violence cases in Nigeria involving the use of hot water.
In February 2022, a woman, Ramota Soliu, reportedly killed her husband in Abeokuta after pouring hot water on him. Similarly, in September 2023, a landlord identified simply as Michael allegedly poured hot water on an 11-year-old girl, Princess, in the Mowe area of Ogun State.
