EKO HOT BLOG reports that the transition took place on Tuesday at the INEC headquarters in Abuja during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners. Agbamuche, who is the longest-serving National Commissioner in the electoral body, will oversee the commission’s affairs until a substantive chairman is appointed.
In his farewell remarks, Professor Yakubu urged INEC commissioners and directors to give Agbamuche their full support, assuring that the commission’s operations would remain stable under her leadership.
Yakubu, who was first appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari on October 21, 2015, succeeded acting chairperson Amina Zakari and was confirmed by the Senate on October 29 of the same year. He was sworn in on November 9, 2015.
After completing his first five-year term, Yakubu was reappointed by Buhari and confirmed by the Senate for a second and final term on December 1, 2020. His tenure officially ends in November 2025, marking ten years of service as INEC chairman.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that President Bola Tinubu is preparing to announce Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the next substantive INEC chairman. According to Sahara Reporters, the appointment is expected to be confirmed at the upcoming Council of State meeting scheduled for Thursday at the State House, Abuja.
