According to a statement issued by the Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, the truck with registration number AKD 135 YK was laden with toner printing materials when it lost control while descending the Oshodi-Oke Bridge inward Mile 2 and fell into the terminal ditch below.
“In an exemplary display of operational precision and alertness, LASTMA operatives rescued a severely injured male victim following a ghastly accident involving a fully loaded six-tyre truck that suffered a brake failure and plunged off the Oshodi Bridge,” Taofiq said.
He added that preliminary findings indicated that the truck experienced a critical mechanical failure while descending the bridge, which caused it to lose control before skidding off the carriageway.
LASTMA officers reportedly arrived at the scene within minutes to commence rescue operations and prevent further accidents.

“Upon arrival, the officers immediately commenced rescue operations and successfully extricated a male victim who sustained grievous injuries. The injured man was quickly conveyed to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment, while the driver was handed over to security operatives from Makinde Police Station, Oshodi, for further investigation,” the statement read.
Taofiq noted that the prompt intervention of LASTMA officials prevented further casualties and secondary collisions.
“To ensure the safety of other road users, operatives cordoned off the scene, diverted traffic, and supervised the clearance of the wreckage restoring traffic normalcy within a short period,” he said.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Bakare Oki, commended the officers for their professionalism and swift response.
He reiterated the agency’s commitment to protecting lives and property on Lagos roads, particularly during the ember months, when accident risks are heightened.
Oki said LASTMA has deployed heavy-duty recovery vehicles, mini trucks, and over 2,700 personnel across strategic traffic points in the state to ensure quick response to emergencies.
“The agency’s 24-hour operations guarantee seamless vehicular movement across the state before, during, and after the festive season,” Oki added.
He also urged motorists to maintain their vehicles regularly and obey traffic regulations, stressing that mechanical faults remain a major cause of crashes nationwide.
The Oshodi area, particularly the busy Oshodi–Apapa Expressway corridor, is one of Lagos’s most congested transport routes, serving as a link between the ports and the mainland.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) 2022 Compendium, mechanical defects such as brake failure and tyre bursts account for about 10 per cent of road crashes in Nigeria.
