President Bola Tinubu has tasked the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, with intensifying efforts to avert another strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Eko Hot Blog reports that Alausa while speaking with journalists after a meeting at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday, assured that the government is committed to restoring Nigeria’s universities to the global prominence they held decades ago.
In response to questions about ASUU’s recent six-day warning strike, Alausa confirmed ongoing negotiations aimed at preventing further disruption to students’ education.
“The President has mandated us to ensure that ASUU does not go on strike again. We are doing everything possible to keep our students in school,” he stated, adding that many of ASUU’s demands had already been addressed.
The Education Minister emphasized that discussions with ASUU leadership were progressing, with regular updates being provided to President Tinubu.

He underscored the administration’s dedication to education and human capital development, which he described as a cornerstone of the government’s broader social policy agenda.
Further, Alausa introduced the Federal Tertiary Institution Governance and Transparency Dashboard, a new initiative designed to enhance accountability across Nigerian tertiary institutions. The dashboard will provide public access to key data on student enrollment, budget allocations, personnel costs, and external funding from entities such as NELFund.
“This initiative will bring much-needed transparency and data-driven oversight, ensuring that all public universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education are held accountable,” Alausa explained. The system will be fully integrated into the Ministry’s website, allowing Nigerians to track the performance of their institutions.
Looking ahead, Alausa reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to elevating Nigeria’s higher education system to the global standards of 30 or 40 years ago, when Nigerian universities were recognized among the top 100 in the world.
