EKO HOT BLOG reports that Family sources confirmed the development on Sunday night, stating that the former governor had struggled with declining health for months before his condition worsened unexpectedly.
According to the family, Obiano suffered severe heart failure and complications linked to urinary cancer. A senior family member described the death as sudden, noting that although his health had been deteriorating, the final collapse “came suddenly.” Medical personnel attending to him also confirmed that he was in intensive care prior to his passing, adding that “he fought till the very last moment.”
Until his death, Obiano was facing trial over an alleged N4 billion money laundering case brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. The Federal High Court in Abuja had scheduled November 25 for continuation of the matter after it was reassigned to Justice Mohammed Umar.
In the previous hearing, EFCC counsel Sylvanus Tahir presented witnesses, including former bank official Ugochukwu Otubelu, who testified on managing the security vote account linked to the former governor. Otubelu stated that the account’s signatories were Willy Nwokoye, Obiano’s former Principal Secretary, and government accountant Theophilus Nweze. He told the court he interfaced with both men frequently while processing related transactions.
Obiano served as governor of Anambra State from 2014 until 2022 when he handed over to the current governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo.
