The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) also announced the suspension of Guinea-Bissau from all its decision-making organs until constitutional order is fully reinstated.

The Extraordinary Session of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council, chaired by Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio, convened to evaluate the worsening crisis triggered by the November 26 coup, which unfolded just days after national elections on November 23.
Attendees included the presidents of Cabo Verde, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, and Sierra Leone, alongside Côte d’Ivoire’s vice president, ministers from several member states, and representatives from regional and international bodies such as the African Union and the United Nations.
During the session, ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray presented a detailed report on the situation. Leaders expressed deep concern over disruptions to the electoral process but commended citizens for their steadfast commitment to democracy.

The council firmly condemned the coup, rejecting any arrangement that undermines the electoral process or the will of the populace.
They demanded unrestricted continuation of election procedures and called for the immediate release of all detained officials, including President Umaro Sissoco Embalo.

The bloc further warned coup leaders that they would be held accountable for the safety of citizens, residents, and detainees.
ECOWAS also announced plans for a high-level mediation mission to engage directly with the coup leaders, while urging the Guinea-Bissau military to return to its constitutional duties.
Meanwhile, international actors including the African Union and European Union echoed calls for the swift restoration of democratic order.
