EKO HOT BLOG reports that the minister conveyed the message on Wednesday during an audience with President Traoré in Ouagadougou, where both sides discussed ways to strengthen bilateral and regional cooperation.
Talks during the meeting focused on key areas, including security collaboration and the ongoing fight against terrorism across the sub region.
Speaking after the engagement, Tuggar said Nigeria and Burkina Faso share long standing diplomatic ties and common security challenges, stressing that the visit was aimed at deepening mutual understanding and neighbourly relations.
“We exchanged views on cooperation in several sectors. We also discussed the Nigerian aircraft that made an emergency landing in Burkina Faso,” Tuggar said.
The minister acknowledged that there were procedural irregularities in the authorisation process for the aircraft’s entry into Burkina Faso’s airspace and expressed Nigeria’s regret over the incident. He added that Nigeria respects Burkina Faso’s sovereignty and international aviation protocols.
Tuggar also distanced the Federal Government from comments made by a Nigerian political party official who alleged that Nigerian military personnel were maltreated in Burkina Faso.
“We clearly dissociate ourselves from those comments and express our sincere regrets to the government of Burkina Faso,” he said.
He commended President Traoré and his administration for their spirit of fraternity and the manner in which the occupants of the aircraft were treated during their stay in the country.
According to the minister, discussions also covered broader regional efforts to combat terrorism and violent extremism, noting that Burkina Faso has recorded notable successes in counter terrorism operations.
Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to sustained dialogue, regional solidarity and enhanced cooperation with Burkina Faso and other countries in the sub region to address shared security challenges.
