A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting in Abuja has granted bail to former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, in connection with charges filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
Justice Bello Kawu granted the bail on Monday, pending the hearing and determination of a substantive motion on notice filed by Malami’s legal team.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the court approved bail on the same terms earlier proposed by the EFCC. These include the surrender of Malami’s international passport and the execution of bail bonds by two sureties.
The sureties are the Director General of the Nigerian Legal Aid Council and a serving member of the House of Representatives representing the Augie Argungu Federal Constituency.
Justice Kawu held that the application for bail was granted on the grounds of exceptional hardship, noting that the decision was without prejudice to the determination of the substantive application before the court.
The case has been adjourned to January 5, 2026, for the hearing of the motion on notice.
Meanwhile, Malami has denied allegations by the EFCC that he operates 46 illegal bank accounts and has links to financial misconduct, including issues related to the repatriation of funds recovered from the late former military ruler, General Sani Abacha.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Bello Doka, the former minister described the allegations as ridiculous and baseless. He insisted that he operates only six bank accounts, all of which, he said, are already known to the anti graft agency.

Doka further stated that Malami has no connection to any recovered Abacha funds or to any other acts of financial impropriety circulating in public discourse.
The former attorney general maintained that he would defend himself vigorously as the legal process continues.
