A quiet Monday evening in Epe turned into a moment of collective grief after a truck conveying sharp sand crashed into a Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) along Hospital Road, leaving at least 10 people feared dead and several others injured.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the incident occurred at about 7:45pm while worship was ongoing inside the church.
Eyewitnesses said the truck, which was coming downhill towards the Hospital Road roundabout, allegedly suffered brake failure. In a desperate attempt to regain control, the driver reportedly struggled to maneuver the vehicle before it veered off the road and rammed into the church structure.
The impact caused panic within and around the church as the building was damaged and worshippers were caught unawares. Initial reports from the scene indicate that seven people died instantly, while three others were believed to be trapped beneath the truck as rescue efforts continued late into the night.
An eyewitness described the moment of impact, saying, “Everything happened so fast. One minute people were praying, the next minute there was a loud crash and people were screaming for help.”
Another resident who joined rescue efforts said, “It was heartbreaking seeing people trapped while others were crying and calling names.”
Emergency response teams were immediately mobilised to the scene.
Personnel of the Nigeria Army, officials of the Epe Fire Service, and other security agencies worked together to rescue victims, clear debris, and secure the area to prevent further casualties.
Hospital Road was partially cordoned off as operations continued.
Residents described the atmosphere as heavy with sorrow, as family members, church members, and sympathisers gathered, hoping for survivors while coming to terms with the tragic loss.
As of the time of this report, authorities were yet to release an official casualty figure, while investigations were expected to commence to determine the exact cause of the crash.
