In a statement, President Tinubu said the honour was granted under the powers vested in him by the National Honours Act, citing Chagoury’s “outstanding virtues” and service to the country. “In recognition of your outstanding virtues and in appreciation of your services to our country, Nigeria, I hereby award you the title, dignity, and privileges of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON),” the president said.
Born in Nigeria to Lebanese immigrant parents, Gilbert Chagoury is the co-founder of the Chagoury Group, a diversified conglomerate established in Lagos in 1971. The group has significant interests across construction, real estate, hospitality, glass manufacturing, and flour milling, making it one of Nigeria’s leading industrial entities.

In related news, President Tinubu also congratulated the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, on his re-election as Chairman of the Africa Minerals Strategic Group (AMSG). AMSG is a forum of African ministers overseeing mining and solid minerals, working to ensure the continent maximises the benefits from its vast mineral resources. Alake, first elected in 2024, was re-elected at the group’s 2026 Annual General Meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Describing Alake’s re-election as a vote of confidence in his leadership, Tinubu praised the minister for his vision, commitment, and advocacy for Africa’s minerals sector.
