Residents of Orhuwhorun community in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State have taken to the streets in a peaceful protest over the deplorable condition of the Orhuwhorun–Owhrode Road and what they described as years of neglect by successive governments.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the protesters, mostly women, marched through major parts of the community carrying placards with messages calling on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to urgently intervene in the worsening state of the road. Some of the placards read: “Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Remember Orhuwhorun-Owhrode,” “Fix the Orhuwhorun–Owhrode Access Road,” and “The Orhuwhorun–Owhrode Road is Not Motorable.”

According to the residents, the road has become a nightmare for motorists and commuters, making movement within the area difficult and negatively affecting economic and social activities. They lamented that the poor condition of the road has increased transportation costs, discouraged commercial drivers from operating in the area and left residents struggling to access neighbouring communities.
Speaking during the protest, a community leader, High Chief Oghale Ighodakpo, said the demonstration was not politically motivated but aimed at drawing the attention of the state government to the suffering of the people.

He explained that the continued neglect of the road has created serious economic challenges for residents, traders and businesses that depend on the route for daily activities. He urged the government to prioritize the reconstruction of the road, describing it as vital to the development of the community and surrounding areas.
Also speaking, the Vice Chairman of Orhuwhorun Community, Chief Cyril Onojeghuo, said the road has become a major obstacle to commerce and everyday life. He noted that workers, students, traders and motorists are among those bearing the burden of the failing infrastructure.
The women leader of the community, Mrs. Victoria Ashakpoke, described the situation as unbearable, saying residents now pay excessive transport fares because many commercial drivers refuse to use the road.
She explained that the road serves as a key link between Orhuwhorun, Owhrode and other neighbouring communities, but years of deterioration have left it almost impassable.
“The daily challenges we face are becoming too much. Transporters avoid the road because it is swampy and badly damaged, forcing us to pay more just to move around. This affects our businesses, access to essential services and our overall quality of life,” she said.
The protesters appealed to Governor Oborevwori to urgently address the situation, insisting that fixing the road would improve economic activities, ease transportation challenges and bring relief to thousands of residents who depend on it daily.
