This monumental achievement underscores the exceptional talent pool within the country and highlights Nigeria’s continued dominance in one of the world’s most competitive international scholarship initiatives.
The official announcement was made by the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States, Gautier Mignot, during the 2026 Erasmus Mundus Pre-Departure Orientation held in Abuja.
While addressing the gathering of departing scholars, Ambassador Mignot revealed that a total of 163 Nigerian students successfully secured admission into the highly coveted Erasmus Mundus master’s programmes for the current academic year.
Out of this group, 89 students clinched the highly sought-after fully funded scholarships.
This impressive statistic not only places Nigeria at the pinnacle of the African continent but also positions the nation within the top five global beneficiaries, alongside countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the United States.
Ambassador Mignot further excelled in elaborating on the remarkable growth trajectory of Nigerian participation in the program.
He noted that the 89 scholarships recorded for the 2026 academic cycle reflect a steady upward progression from the 81 recipients recorded in the previous year, 2025.
Since Nigeria officially joined the Erasmus initiative back in 2014, the country has made significant strides, and the program is now rapidly approaching a historic milestone of 1,000 total Nigerian beneficiaries.
The EU Envoy emphasized that the structure of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s program offers an unparalleled global educational experience, allowing selected scholars to study at a minimum of two different universities in separate European nations, ultimately graduating with joint, double, or multiple master’s degrees.
According to the ambassador, the European Union remains deeply committed to collaborating with key Nigerian educational stakeholders, including the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission, to further elevate the country’s global standing.
He expressed optimism that with concerted efforts, Nigeria could break into the top three global rankings in the near future.
Furthermore, Mignot highlighted that the scholarship scheme serves as a clear, merit-based pathway for legal and regular migration, providing young, capable, and talented Nigerians with the opportunity to travel, learn, and excel on the international stage based purely on their academic merits and intellectual capabilities.
Key representatives from Nigeria’s educational sector also took turns to charge the departing scholars to be exemplary representatives of their homeland.
Speaking on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Professor Abdullahi Ribadu, the Director of the Directorate of Students, Dr. Chinelo Nwosu, expressed deep appreciation to the European Union for its consistent investments in developing Nigeria’s human capital.
She passionately urged the beneficiaries to maximize the golden opportunity, focus intensely on their studies, stay clear of trouble, and ultimately return to Nigeria to deploy their newly acquired skills toward national development.
Echoing these sentiments, the Director of the Department of Scholarship Awards in the Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs. Liman K.A.A., who represented the Permanent Secretary, stated that the orientation celebrated the enduring and fruitful partnership between Nigeria and the EU in advancing innovation and research.
She reminded the students that their conduct, character, and academic performance would shape global perceptions of Nigeria and inspire future generations of scholars.

One of the ecstatic beneficiaries, Oluchi Yulis Myron, who is set to undertake a Master’s degree in cultural management, shared her excitement regarding the upcoming journey.
She noted that the program provides an invaluable chance to experience diverse international cultures, learn new languages, and gain global insights into heritage preservation, which she intends to utilize upon her return to boost Nigeria’s creative and cultural industries.
As these 89 scholars prepare to embark on their academic journeys across Europe, their success stands as a testament to the resilience and brilliance of Nigerian youths, setting a standard for future generations and reinforcing Nigeria’s academic reputation on the global stage.
