Spain were crowned champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Argentina 1-0 after extra time in a tense final at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday, ending Lionel Messi’s hopes of retaining the trophy.

The final failed to produce the attacking spectacle many had anticipated, with Spain dominating possession and creating the majority of the scoring opportunities, while Argentina struggled to threaten throughout the contest.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez kept Argentina in the match with a series of crucial saves, frustrating Spain for much of the encounter. However, he was eventually beaten in extra time when Torres capitalised on Spain’s sustained pressure to fire home the winning goal.

Lamine Yamal produced the first real opening of the game inside four minutes, signalling Spain’s attacking intent. Mikel Oyarzabal also tested Martínez before Marc Cucurella narrowly missed the target with a low effort.

Argentina relied heavily on physical defending to disrupt Spain’s rhythm, with several players entering the referee’s book. Lisandro Martínez was cautioned before being forced off through injury, while Leandro Paredes was also booked shortly after coming on as a second-half substitute.

Spain continued to push after the restart, with Torres heading straight at Martínez before Pedri and Aymeric Laporte also went close as the European side searched for the breakthrough.

The pressure eventually paid off in extra time when Torres found space inside the box and scored what proved to be the winning goal, sparking celebrations among the Spanish players and supporters.

The victory marked Spain’s second FIFA World Cup triumph, adding to the title they won in 2010, which also came after a goalless 90 minutes before a decisive extra-time winner.

For Argentina, the defeat brought an end to their title defence and left Messi heartbroken after what could prove to be his final appearance on football’s biggest stage.
