Esther Nworgu has delivered Nigeria’s first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after emerging victorious in the women’s lightweight para powerlifting category.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that Nworgu recorded a best lift of 123kg and accumulated 119 points to secure the top position, leading Team Nigeria to a remarkable opening success at the competition.

Her triumph was followed by another strong performance from Nigerian athlete Esther Oyema, who claimed the silver medal after posting a best lift of 125kg and finishing with 115.5 points.
England’s Olivia Broome completed the podium in third place, scoring 106.6 points from a 119kg lift.
Nworgu also set two Commonwealth Games records during the event, further highlighting her dominance and confirming her place among the competition’s leading athletes.
The victory adds to Nigeria’s impressive history in para powerlifting, a sport where the country has consistently achieved success at global competitions.
The Paralympic silver medallist produced a confident and technically strong display, while Oyema’s silver medal further strengthened Nigeria’s impressive start at the Games.
