The Nigeria Police Force had previously issued a statement clarifying that IGP Disu did not order an indiscriminate “shoot-on-sight” policy, explaining that his remarks referred strictly to Force Order 237, which governs the operational guidelines and Rules of Engagement for firearm use.
Oshiomhole, however, insisted that officers should take direct action, stating, “That’s why when this IG was saying he didn’t say ‘shoot at sight,’ why is he apologetic? Shoot at sight. If you see a criminal, shoot on sight.”
Addressing broader national security challenges, Oshiomhole identified ongoing insecurity as the primary hurdle confronting President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
While commending the administration’s macroeconomic tools and structural expansion within the military, including the creation of new army divisions and the recruitment of 20,000 additional personnel, he urged the President to hold service chiefs strictly accountable.
He called for concrete benchmarks and firm timelines to ensure that military expenditure yields measurable results in terminating insecurity within the coming months.
The lawmaker also commended the Department of State Services for appealing a judicial ruling that handed down life imprisonment instead of the death penalty to convicted offenders.
He emphasized that judges must implement established statutory laws rather than personal sentiments when sentencing violent criminals.
Dismissing opposition claims that President Tinubu lacks public visibility, Oshiomhole maintained that the President actively presides over executive meetings, delivers policy addresses, and directs the nation’s political economy, adding that voters will rationally evaluate the administration’s performance at the polls.
