The Kano State House of Assembly has passed the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board (Amendment) Bill, 2026, introducing measures aimed at improving the oversight and administration of private and voluntary educational institutions across the state.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that the bill was approved during Monday’s plenary after lawmakers adopted the report of the House Committee on Education, which reviewed the proposed legislation following consultations with stakeholders and public hearings.
Speaking after its passage, Speaker Ismail Falgore praised members of the Assembly for their commitment to the legislative process, describing the amendment as a major milestone in enhancing the management and regulation of private schools in Kano.
A key provision of the amended law is the establishment of the office of an Executive Secretary to oversee the day-to-day administration of the board and improve its operational efficiency.
The legislation also requires private and voluntary schools to obtain official approval before implementing any increase in tuition or other school fees.
According to the Assembly, the measure is intended to protect parents and guardians from unjustified fee increases while ensuring that any proposed adjustments are subject to government oversight.
Lawmakers noted that the amendment was shaped by contributions from education stakeholders gathered during public hearings organised by the House Committee on Education before the bill received final approval.
